Selkie Sticker Art by Calan Ree

$4.00

Vinyl sticker of selkie sculpture, a seal person found in Norse and Celtic folklore.. This sculpture was featured in my REALM show at Stranger Factory. It’s one of my favorite sculptures. More on the folklore below, but first some details…

Sticker measures 3.5” long by 2” wide.

Very durable, high quality, weather resistant die-cut vinyl sticker that you can put outdoors or in and be sure to have years of crisp imagery. The protective laminate will help protect the sticker from rain and sunlight. So go ahead and put it on your car, water bottle, etc. You can even put it in the dishwasher, but I’d personally hand wash gently because I’d like to get as many years as possible without fading.

Now for the folklore…

Selkies, a type of faery, are seal people who are able to shed their skin and take human form. Male selkies are described as irresistible and love to seduce women in unhappy marriages. Female selkies are equally stunning and will shed their skins to dance beneath the moonlight. Sometimes a man will steal the skin of a selkie and this will trapping her in human form and be the man's wife. There are some stories where the two fall in love and others that the male simply traps her and she is forced to marry him, but either path leads to sadness. Eventually, sometimes many years later, the skin is discovered and the female selkie feels a deep call back to the sea which she answers, leaving behind the husband she may or may not have loved, as well as any offspring. The children being half selkie will be able to hear her song and visit her among the waves now and then, but otherwise will live without their mother.
