A selection of figurative ceramic sculpture by artist Calan Ree. Works shown are one off pieces, not part of any series.
A selection of Mushroom Friends. Each Mushroom Friend is hand sculpted and one of a kind. Mushroom Friend Minis are first slip cast to get the basic form and then details such as eyes and cap textures, dots are added before firing and hand painting, so still one of a kind but the general shape and size are consistent.
Art Dolls and Mixed Media Sculpture
Calan Ree's art dolls and mixed media sculpture often include natural elements such as seed pods, roots, animal bones (found in nature by myself or others, never from hunted animals) as well as found objects be it a rusty set of nails, vintage doll arm or smashed bottlecap. There is often traditional clay involved..ceramic and/or epoxy clay. Anything goes.
Thinking Hearts and Such
Thinking Hearts remind us to listen to our hearts, Resilient Hearts remind us that we can endure quite a bit and still bounce back ready to love and laugh again. This section is dedicated to heart inspired art.
My fairies are inspired by European folk lore. They are mischievous. They are sometimes grumpy or pout. They will keep their mischief to small annoyances like knotting your hair when you sleep, providing you respect them and make offerings of milk and honey. They love to be around other fairies. Each fairy is hand sculpted and no two will ever be identical…just like the real thing!
A selection of some of the ceramic wall masks I've created.
Death Rattles and Taytos
What do Death Rattles and Taytos have in common? And what the heck is a Tayto anyway?
Death Rattles and Taytos don't really have anything in common other than they are roommates in this gallery and get along swimmingly. Before we talk about Taytos let's talk about Death Rattles for a moment. The rattles are small mixed media sculptures ceramic, steel and various embellishments. Each Death Rattle is filled with 13 LUCKY pennies. The idea of the Death Rattle is the opposite of dark and gloomy. The idea is instead to remind you that life is ephemeral and it is up to you to make the most of it. The rattle sound says, 'Hey, lets shake things up a little. Let's try something new. Let's open our heart and love without fear. Let's not give a damn who is watching or judging...let's just be ourselves." The skull smiles at you and invites you to embrace life while you still can.
As for the Taytos...well, taytos are simply taytos. They were born from a mold I made of a sweet potato which I use to press clay into and get a very basic shape. Then I create a very unique little potato person that I call a Tayto. I am not sure when I will create more Taytos, but when another litter is ready to be born, I will make it happen.
